Foods to eat if you have varicose veins

Eating a healthy balanced diet can help relieve the discomfort of varicose veins and to prevent them from cropping up.

Foods that help circulation are great for veins as they prevent blockage and allow proper blood flow, reducing the chance of varicose veins forming.

Make sure to include the following in your diet:

  • Water- staying hydrated means that everything can circulate properly, it also aids the fibre we eat in preventing constipation. Reduce alcohol intake and sugary drinks as these can counteract water hydrating effects.
  • Fruits and vegetables -including a colourful array in your diet will ensure that you benefit from lots of anti-inflammatory properties. Broccoli, Spinach, Grapes, citrus fruits and blackberries are all great for this.
  • Fibre – adding fibre rich foods helps you to stay fuller for longer meaning they are great for controlling weight gain. They are also good for ensuring that we don’t get constipated, as this can put pressure on the veins. Foods to include are whole grains, oats, nuts and leafy green vegetables

Things to avoid:

  • Foods that aid water retention -Additional salt and processed foods can all cause water retention. This puts pressure on the valves within the veins and can result in varicose veins
  • Sugar -High amounts of sugar can lead to poor vein health due to the amount of insulin released by the body. Stick to natural sugars, where when consumed in moderation are good for the body
  • Alcohol – this has been linked to worsening of varicose veins as it affects the circulatory system so should be consumed in moderation.

Adding superfood juices to your diet are a great nutritional addition, packed with nutrients and vitamins, they can help you feel full for longer aiding with weight loss and giving you an energy boost to get though the day.
