Everyone wants to stay healthy this winter but what can you do to help yourself stay well. Whilst there is no single answer a diet rich in immune boosting nutrients will set you in the right direction.
The nutrients that keep our immune system working well include vitamins A, B6, B12, C and D as well as copper, folate, iron, selenium, and zinc. With the exception of vitamin D you should be able to get enough of these through your foods, providing you are eating the right type of food. Add the following to your diet along with plenty of fluids and you will be supporting a healthy immune system.
Wheatgrass juice-Chlorophyll - the lovely dark green substance found in the leaves of plants can help support a healthy immune system. It's one of the reasons we love our wheatgrass juice so much as its packed full of it! This powerhouse of a superfood contains particularly high levels of vitamins A and E and 92 minerals (out of the 102 we need), 21 amino acids (out of a possible 24) and over 80 enzymes.
Turmeric: Has antiseptic, analgesic, and immune-boosting properties due to the active polyphenol called curcumin, traditionally known for its anti-inflammatory effects, curcumin has recently been shown to be a potent immunomodulatory agent that can modulate the activation of T cells, B cells, macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells.
Beetroot: This powerful vegetable is packed with nutritional benefits. Containing high levels of folate an essential B-Vitamin, vital for maintaining healthy cells and repairing DNA, it’s great for strengthening your immune system. Beetroot is also a great detoxifier which also helps with immunity as its staves off infection. Add to these high levels of vitamin C and beetroot is a great addition to any diet.
Barleygrass juice:Rich in many key nutrients that help to support the immune system, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and enzymes. High in Vitamin E which helps maintain healthy skin and eyes and also strengthen the body's natural defence against illness and infection (the immune system).
Water: Finally, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If you’re dehydrated, your body is already under stress and your immune system is weakened. Keep that radiator topped up and the fuel gauge healthy and you’ll keep your health on the right road.
