How can I boost my immune system fast?

Building a strong immune system doesn’t happen overnight but you can strengthen it with a few lifestyle changes. An optimised immune system is our best internal defence against germs and infections so it’s great to do all we can to ensure that it is working at its best.

Our top tips are:

Drink water

Water helps to carry oxygen to our cells and nutrients to our organs, if we don’t have enough water our cells don’t get what they need. Water is also crucial for detoxifying the body, making sure we get rid of any unwanted substance. It’s a great way to support your immune system so top up the water intake and keep the bugs at bay.

Get plenty of sleep

Research has shown that sleep can help improve immune cells known as T cells. These calls are important as when they detect a virus or foreign body, they set out to destroy it, making the a front line of defence for our immune system. Getting a good night’s sleep not only makes you feel better but is also helping to protect your body.

Eat a balanced diet

Look to add immunity-boosting foods to your diet that contain high levels of Vitamins A, C and E, as they all increase the production of infection-fighting white blood cells and antibodies. Citrus fruit, broccoli and peppers are all packed with Vitamin C, sunflower seeds and almonds are high in Vitamin E, and sweet potato, Kale and carrots are high in Vitamin A. Add a wheatgrass juice shot for a super-powered boost. The king of the superfoods, it contains particularly high levels of vitamins A and E, 92 minerals (out of the 102 we need), 21 amino acids (out of a possible 24) and over 80 enzymes.

Manage Stress

When we're stressed, our immune system has a reduced capacity to fight off antigens and make us more prone to infections. Also, when we are stressed, we tend to turn to unhealthy devices to help us cope, comfort food, alcohol etc. Whilst not easy to manage all stress adding some relaxation into the day or meditation can make us relax and importantly help our immune system.

Exercise

Exercise has a huge number of health benefits. Your heart and lungs grow stronger and increase the rate at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The distribution of oxygen to the rest of your body then improves. The immune system is no different: like a muscle, it gets stronger the more you use it. The stronger your body and the cells within it, the more resistant your immune system becomes.
