Adaptogens to aid immunity

Adaptogens to aid immunity

The group of plants, herbs and mushrooms commonly known as adaptogens are probably best known for their stress-relieving properties. However, recently it has been found that they could also help in boosting immunity.

It is thought that adaptogens work to balance the immune system and help the body to maintain optimal homeostasis.

Studies also suggest adaptogens interact with the immune-neuro-endocrine system, which helps the body regulate its use of energy and maintain strong immune defences.

These are some of the most popular adaptogens for immunity.

Tulsi/ Holy Basil
Can give your immune system a boost by helping regulate its responses. A traditional Ayurveda belief is that holy basil improves overall immunity when taken on an empty stomach. Researchers verified this idea in a small study. The results showed improved immune system benchmarks, including an increase in the levels of T cells. T cells are a type of blood cell that fights infections.

Maca
Often called the “Peruvian ginseng” Maca has been used in Chinese medicine to treat “menopausal symptoms,” depression, and to stabilise blood pressure.  Maca is known to help boost immunity by improving your overall health, especially its power to help fight free radicals.

Reishi
Chinese medical practitioners have long recognised the value of the medicinal Reishi mushroom and used it to promote healthy, long lives in their patients. Today we are beginning to recognise the broad range of properties this mushroom has to offer.

Recent research has shown that one of these benefits is their ability to counteract immunosenescence, ageing and gradual loss of immune function. Immunosenescence raises the risk for infection, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

We use adaptogens in many of our juices, for example our Kale, Reishi and Maca juice. To order yours simply visit our shop today.
