10 top tips for fabulous summer skin

We all look forward to the summer - warmer weather, longer days and more time outside. But just as we alter our clothes for the warmer months, we also need to change the way we look after our skin.

Warmer weather means stronger UV rays, more sweating and exposure to different environmental factors. We take a look at the top ten things you can do to make sure you have sunkissed skin throughout the summer and beyond.

The sun’s rays are stranger in the summer than in the winter so you shouldn't leave home without wearing sunscreen.

Experts recommend an SPF of 30 or higher on all exposed areas of the body, not forgetting ears, lips and feet!

The sun’s UV rays not only damage the skin but over-exposure puts you at a higher risk of developing certain cancers, so make sure you re-apply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming.

In your routine sunscreen should be applied last, on top of your make up so choose a brand that allows your skin to breathe so that your make-up stays in place!

2. Wear less makeup

Talking of make-up, why not embrace the warmer days and remove a layer? This will give your skin a break and allow it to breathe. If you do want to make up opt for a tinted moisturiser rather than a heavy foundation and always remember the SPF

3. Antioxidants

Vitamin E plays an important role in the skin antioxidant defences and can protect against UV rays, pollution and free radicals that damage skin cells. It may also help to slow the production of melanin, which can cause dark spots

Our superfood juices are packed with Vitamin E, specifically our organic wheatgrass juice, which contains 145% of the RDA, and our blended green juice which has 118%. Both are fantastic ways to drink your way to healthy skin.  Adding this to your diet can help prevent premature ageing and create clear glowing skin.

4. Keep moisturising

Even though the air tends to not be so dry in the summer, you still need to moisturise. It is advisable to use a lighter version so that it doesn't feel so heavy on your face and try to look for products that include antioxidants.

5. Exfoliate

Sun tan lotion and sweat can play havoc with your pores, so you need to exfoliate during the warmer months. Regular exfoliation removes the outer dead layers of the skin leaving you with that sun-kissed glow that we all want.

If you are unfortunate to get sunburn don't exfoliate as this could irritate the skin and make things worse. Wait for fort the skin to heal and then continue with your routine.

6. Stay in the shade

It may sound obvious but spending time in the shade not only allows you to get out of the heat but also give your skin some time away from the harmful UV rays of the sun. You can still, be tanned in the shade but are a lot less likely to get burned.

7. Shower less!

We all tend to shower or bathe more in the summer months, we are hot and sweaty and weren't to be clean, all of which is great. However, excess time in the water can cause our skin to become dry and irritated and if we have the water temperature too high it can cause further irritation and even summer eczema.

The advice is to shower frequently but for short periods and to apply a moisturiser afterwards.

8. Cool clothes

Another one that may sound obvious, is that if we are comfortable we are less likely to sweat and less likely to irritate our skin. Natural loose-fitting fibres are best and there are even clothes now that have specific UV protection built-in to protect your body.

A hat is an essential part of a summer wardrobe and it keeps the sun away from your scalp and ears. Remember a baseball hat isn’t as effective as a wide-brimmed one!

9. Lips

Don't forget your lips, they are as exposed as any other part of our body but often forgotten. If they get burnt they get cracked, sore and often peel. A common location for skin and lip cancer it’s important to wear a lip balm with an SPF factor of 15 and above.

Also as we are always eating and drinking it’s good to reapply every couple of hours.

10. Protect from the inside out

We all know the saying 'You are what you eat but how often do we really think about it? What we put into our bodies are the building blocks for our health system, from muscle function to cell development and skin health.

By consuming superfood juices regularly we can support our skin health and achieve a natural glow. So, before you reach for that expensive pot of face cream, take a look at what your diet can do for your skin.
