Health benefits of Maqui berry
Share
Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is an exotic, dark-purple fruit that grows wild in South America.
It’s mainly harvested by the native Mapuche Indians of Chile, who have used the leaves, stems and berries medicinally for thousands of years
Today, we use Maqui berry for to its high antioxidant content and potential health benefits, including reduced inflammation, blood sugar control and heart health.
5 benefits of Maqui berries
1.Can fight inflammation
Maqui berry demonstrates promising anti-inflammatory effects in test-tube and clinical studies. This suggests that it may help combat conditions associated with inflammation.
Inflammation naturally occurs when our body is trying to defend itself against injury or infection. But too much inflammation can lead to chronic diseases.
The high levels of anthocyanin in Maqui have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.
2.May support a healthy heart
Studies have confirmed that diets high in anthocyanins (the antioxidant compound found in maqui) were associated with a 32% reduced risk of heart attacks, compared to those lowest in these antioxidants.
In addition to reducing heart attacks, Maqui berry has also been shown to lower levels of bad cholesterol, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
In another large study , diets high in anthocyanins were associated with a 12% reduced risk of high blood pressure.
3.Supports good gut health
Maqui berry may benefit gut health by promoting the growth of good bacteria in your intestines.
Your gut microbiome has a huge effect on digestion, metabolism and your immune system. Keeping it in top working order is largely due to diet Studies have shown that Maqui berry can actually re-shape harmful bacteria and can metabolise anthocyanins and use them to rebuild good bacteria!
4. Can help regulate blood sugar levels
Blood sugar develops from the food we eat and Maqui berry may help naturally moderate blood sugar levels.
In a three-month clinical study in people with prediabetes, 180 mg of Maqui berry extract once daily reduced average blood sugar levels by 5%.
Though this 5% decrease seems small, it was enough to bring participants’ blood sugar down to normal levels
While more research is needed, there’s promising evidence that Maqui can help regulate blood sugar levels and promote healthy insulin distribution.
5. Can promote good eye health
Studies show that antioxidants – like those found in Maqui berry – can prevent light-induced damage to the retina.
Maqui berry can also help relieve eye fatigue. In a clinical trial of 74 participants, 60 mg of Maqui berry extract daily for 4 weeks encouraged healthy tear production as well as offered relief for tired, uncomfortable eyes.
We add Maqui berries to our delicious Beetroot & Maqui Juice. British athletes used beetroot juice as a natural performance enhancer during training for the 2012 Olympic Games and whilst we’re not promising record-breaking times, you’ll love how energised you feel!
