This year is the year of the Ox and in Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal, as it's hardworking, honest and reliable. It's thought that people born in the year of the Ox are healthy, fit, strong and are reliable, intelligent workers.
Although celebrations for the year of the Ox may be slightly different this year, the significance remains. The beginning of the Lunar New Year is a very important and auspicious time to honour household and heavenly deities as well as ancestors.
Traditionally a time for families to come together and feast on symbolic foods, it may be more low-key this year but the celebration is just as significant.
The symbolism of the traditions is fascinating, so we thought we'd look at a few to see how we could use our superfood juice products to emulate them.
The colour red is believed to be a colour of good luck, joy and prosperity. People often wear red clothes, display red lanterns and give red money packets at Chinese New Year.
Our Elixir Vitality juice is crammed full of anti-oxidant berries and is red in colour. Containing:
- • Vitamin C
- • Vitamin A
- • Vitamin B2
- • Vitamin K
- • Iron
- • Selenium.
And so it makes a healthy addition to any Chinese New Year celebration.
Fish is eaten during the Lunar New Year as the word for fish in Chinese is similar to the word for abundance.
By eating fish you're thought to be bringing an abundance of fortune into the new year. And It's important to eat the whole of the fish so that you're not being wasteful.
Fish is a great source of protein and oily fish is full of omega 3 oils and vitamin D. As our bodies can’t make omega 3 it's essential that we consume enough.
Another way of doing this is though omega 3 oils. We recommend Zinzino Omega 3 oil, derived from whole fish with cold-pressed olive oil and vitamin D3. You'll need a partner recommendation so please used the code: 2005865669.
Green leaves signify longevity, hope and renewal in Chinese culture. Often served to wish long life for parents, no Chinese feast would be complete without them.
We know the nutritious benefits of green leaves, especially of our organic wheatgrass.
Grown outside in the fresh air, our wheatgrass juice is full of lovely green chlorophyll and as a result, has a myriad of benefits, including:
- • Supporting immunity
- • Boosting energy levels
- • Reducing fatigue.
Chinese dumplings are synonymous with their new year. They also represent prosperity because their shape resembles ancient silver ingots which were Chinese currency.
They generally consist of pork or finely chopped vegetables wrapped in a thin dough. Sometimes families add a lucky coin to one of the dumplings.
We've made dumplings using our ginger, turmeric and apple juice. By adding this to the vegetable mix before placing in the dough wrapper, you gain a great taste and are adding nutrients to your dish. Ginger and turmeric are staples of Asian cooking, so blend nicely.
These are eaten and displayed at Chinese New Year as they're a popular symbol of good luck. The Chinese for a mandarin is kam, which sounds similar to the word for gold, so the theory is the more you have the wealthier you'll be!
Adding our turmeric, ginger and apple juice to a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, would be befitting for a New Year’s meal. We made a special Chinese New Year’s smoothie and added grapes and pineapple for a special celebratory drink.
